Presentation

Montreal du Gers, one of the first bastides of Gascony which has managed to retain the character of these new towns typical of the Middle Ages.

The name of the city, Montreal (or "Montroyal"), recalls the royal origin of this fortified town founded in 1255 by Alphonse de Poitiers. Built on the rock on a promontory overlooking the small valley of the Auzoue River, it was brought to fulfill a strategic role as a lock placed between the French and English domains at the time of the Hundred Years' War.
From its past, Montréal-du-Gers preserves a rich heritage: fortified walls, ogival city gate, half-timbered houses, square surrounded by solid stone arcades, narrow passages serving the different blocks of the bastide.

To discover the village independently, take the visit sheet available at the Tourist Office, the "Souvenir Factory". Let yourself be surprised by this place of discovery which reveals 4 rooms with original decoration, offering the mosaic of the region's must-see activities: themed games, immersion in the Armagnac-Gascogne vineyard, local recipes, souvenir shop...

Pleasant to live in, the town also benefits from a prime location in the heart of the vines which produce Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne. Montréal-du-Gers also owes its notoriety to the nearby Gallo-Roman villa of Séviac. The visitor finds himself facing an immense country palace where a series of rooms, marble colonnades, galleries opening onto gardens, sumptuous thermal baths and mosaic floors have been unearthed. Unique in Europe in their number, their colors and their state of conservation, these mosaics unfold like sumptuous carpets decorated with flowers and foliage, vines and grapes, birds and swirling suns. A must see !

Take La Clé des Champs and go "Au salon!" An invitation to rest, a hymn to relaxation, to see nature differently... Don't forget to leave the light on when you leave!
To get there: go down from the village following the direction of Castelnau d'Auzan. On the D15, leaving Montreal, park in the leisure center car park. Go around the lake to the left for 250m.
