Presentation

Owned by the Toulouse Museum, the Montréal-du-Gers paleontological site is considered one of the major sites discovered in Europe in the 20th century. It is dated to approximately 17 million years ago.

Since its discovery in 1987, it has revealed a high concentration of fossils: more than 90 vertebrate species have been recorded, including 50 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. To date, four new species for science have been identified there, including Ampelomeryx, nicknamed the "giraffe deer."

Due to its rich paleontological record, the site possesses significant heritage value. Excavations are ongoing, and the fossils preserved there provide information about the animals that lived in the region during the Miocene epoch.

To immerse yourself in this fascinating era, "When Gascony was a jungle", and discover the incredible diversity of the fauna that populated its places, join the guided tours offered throughout the year.
