Gers/Ténarèze Tourism CollectionTHE RUSH TO THE EAST - Mountain Biking-FFC 5 - Condom
Condom
Attached to the Saint-Pierre cathedral, the cloister is one of the jewels of the ancient episcopal city of Condom.
Built in the 16th century, shortly after the construction of the cathedral, its vast dimensions and elegant arcades are impressive. There are two ways to access it.
After admiring or posing in front of the statue of "d'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers," head east, towards the gravel courtyard. This gallery once housed a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine. It retains three pointed arches decorated with nine painted and sculpted keystones bearing the coats of arms of the bishops. Originally, this space also likely housed the chapter house: a meeting place where the cathedral canons conducted business for the religious community.
On the Place Bossuet side, to the west, a discreet door allows you to enter the cloister. The floor formerly dedicated to the cells of the monks, is occupied by the city's cultural service.
2 beautiful sculpted Renaissance-style doors remind us that the cloister communicated with the cathedral and the Bishop's palace.
During the Wars of Religion, the galleries suffered significant destruction. Following the French Revolution, it was sold as national property. Stills and barrels of Armagnac were stored there until it was bought by the town hall in 1860.
Nowadays, it is a public and festive space where events take place throughout the year: a market at the nursery in the spring, not forgetting the Bandas festival in May. In the summer, this exceptional setting is transformed into a cultural venue with plays and concerts.
