PR KARST TRAIL – 8 KM - Loop path for walking and hiking – Karst Trail – Starting point: Porte Nord or Porte de Rocamadour
This is the Karst Trail in La Romieu: Underground rivers, sinkholes, resurgence, wash houses, tawny sand caves... A whole geological universe to discover!
What is a karst? It's a limestone mountain where precipitation (rain, snow) doesn't flow on the surface, but rather inside the rock. It seeps into the rock, dissolving the limestone and widening its passage. It's the water that carves out chasms and caves, forming underground rivers...
To help you with this hike, an information booklet is on sale for €2 at the Tourist Offices in Fleurance, Lectoure or La Romieu.
A karst under cereals and oaks.
A stone's throw from the Way of Santiago de Compostela, the karst of La Romieu hides its secret well under the fields of cereals and the oaks of the Bois de Broustès.
Along a pleasant path, you will discover behind the scenes...
By traversing the karst of La Romieu, this trail allows you to give another vision of the agricultural and forest panorama which is offered to hikers and to reveal the hidden activity of the underground environment which composes it: the course of underground waters, the caves, the cliffs, etc... almost invisible to neophytes and yet so linked to the surface landscape. It is therefore up to those who take this route to observe and perceive the close link between the visible and the invisible, to grasp what is happening underground to better understand what we see on the surface.
Starting from the magnificent site of La Collégiale in La Romieu, the seven terminals that mark out the route offer stops to observe and understand the hidden mysteries of this karstic massif.
You can explore this trail independently all year round. The information from the seven markers along the trail will help you better understand the site and its interest. For more information, you can also obtain before your arrival on the trail, the specific educational booklet which will accompany you throughout the route.
The La Romieu & Gazaupouy karst trail "A karst under the cereals and oaks" belongs to a network of educational trails, proposed by the Occitanie Regional Speleology Committee. Through remarkable points marked on the trails by markers and an accompanying educational booklet, these trails allow you to discover exceptional sites of natural and cultural karst heritage.
The La Romieu & Gazaupouy trail is the fourth trail in the regional network, after that of Aspet in Haute-Garonne, Sorèze in Tarn and St-Pé de Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
