The fragmentation of Gascony at the beginning of the early Middle Ages weakened the political balance of the entire region. Marquisates, viscounties and counties were then born, etc. The numerous and close lords secured their lands by building fortified towers and especially castles, over a period running between the 13th and 15th centuries. One turn of the hourglass later, a historian and an engraver, Philippe Lauzun and Pierre Benouville, inventoried and studied them. From this remarkable work the title of Gascon Castles appears.
