Discovered by chance in 1987 and belonging to the Toulouse Museum, the paleontological site of Montréal-du-Gers is one of the major sites in Europe and the most important paleontological site discovered in France in a century. It is dated to approximately 17 million years ago.
In the deposit, a rich fossil fauna was found. Since its discovery, thousands of bones have been excavated; more than 90 species of vertebrates have been recorded, including 50 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. Among the species found, four species new to science have been described to date.
Due to its wealth, at the paleontological level and the importance of the discoveries, the site has a great heritage value. The deposit is part of the various inventories of Geological Heritage, and is considered of international interest.
