Sonia Astacio
Sonia Astacio is a regular on the Chicago blues scene, performing at world-renowned and long-established clubs such as Buddy Guy's Legends, Blue Chicago, Kingston Mines, Rosa's Lounge, and Harlem Avenue Lounge. She has also performed at the Muddy Waters MOJO Museum, the Granville Blues Fest, the Red White & Blues Fest, and several editions of the Chicago Blues Festival. She combines a powerful voice and energetic Chicago Electric Blues style with a burlesque-inspired performance.
Sonia Astacio Downs was born in Chicago, the seventh child of an American-Dominican family. Her parents immigrated to the United States in 1955. From a young age, she discovered her love of music by singing with her siblings in church. Initially, her first passion was jazz, with artists such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, but after hearing "Baby Please Don't Go" by Muddy Waters and the Rolling Stones (Live at the Checkerboard Recording), the blues captivated her heart and soul, and she has never looked back.
Sonia joined the Nu Blu Band in 2005 and is now an honorary member. She incorporates her Afro-Latin roots when she performs blues standards in Spanish. She leads The Sonia Astacio Downs Band and is currently working on an album inspired by her experience as a young Black Latina growing up in Chicago. Her powerful voice, captivating personality, and natural talent enthrall audiences wherever she performs. She is a true ambassador of Chicago Electric Blues.
